A post-mortem examination is due to take place on the body of a man who died following an incident in Co Waterford last night.

Jamie Docey,18, from Dungarvan died following an incident on the Clonea Road area of Abbeyside outside Dungarvan after midnight.

The incident involved a group of four young men all believed to be from the area.

Glass from a number of bottles were found on the road this morning.

The group were at or near the house of a senior garda, who is stationed in Dungarvan, when bottles were broken or thrown.

The off-duty officer came out of the house and there was a confrontation with the men.

The garda was hit on the head with a bottle, but was not seriously injured.

The group fled on foot in different directions.

Mr Docey was apparently trying to get over railings at the back of a housing estate when he fell.

His body was recovered after an extensive search, which included the Coast Guard helicopter.

His cause of death is unknown but he may have fallen on something before ending up in a small stream near the railings.

Three men were arrested but gardaí have released one of them while the other two are being held at Dungarvan Garda Station.

As the incident involved a serving garda at the early stage, the Garda Ombudsman Commission is now leading the investigation.
