A delegation from the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children visited the HSE's medical card centre in Finglas this morning.
A variety of issues in relation to medical cards, including delays in the processing of new applications and delays in the review processes were discussed.
The delegation was told by the HSE that some medical card documentation has been misfiled and the issue is being addressed.
Chairman of the committee Jerry Buttimer, said people in charge of the scheme need to review its operations.
Speaking after the two and a half meeting, Mr Buttimer said he hopes as a consequence of today's discussions, there will be a compassionate approach to people and better communications.
He said the delegation was told that if it turns out that someone has been asked if their child still has Down Syndrome disciplinary action will be taken.
