A woman in her 70s has died after the car she was a passenger in crashed into another vehicle in Co Carlow.

The collision happened at around 2.45pm at Kilcarrig in Bagenalstown.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 70s, was taken to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny with serious injuries.

The woman who was driving the second vehicle was also taken to St Luke's in Kilkenny with non-life threatening injuries.

The road was closed for a time but has re-opened after garda forensic collision investigators examined the scene.
