An 18-month-old boy has died in a farm accident in Co Cork.

The accident happened close to the boy's home near the village of Killeagh in east Cork at around midday.

It is understood the boy was killed when he was struck by a tractor on the farm.

The child's father contacted the emergency services and a medical response team attended the scene, along with gardaí.

The boy's death is being treated as a tragic accident.

His body has been taken to Cork University Hospital, where a post mortem examination will be conducted later.

Gardaí have begun an investigation and the Health and Safety Authority has also been informed.
