A 47-year-old man has been charged with possession of explosives with intent to endanger life in Belfast.

Thomas Hughes from Maeve House in the New Lodge area of the city appeared before Belfast Magistrates Court this morning.

He was charged with having 2.5kg of Semtex explosive with intent to endanger life.

Police believe it is the largest amount of explosive recovered in Northern Ireland in the last ten years.

It was found in an airing cupboard in a flat in the New Lodge area of Belfast earlier this week.
