The Irish Medical Organisation has agreed to have "talks about talks" with the Minister with responsibility for Primary Care Alex White on Government plans for free GP care for the under sixes.

The IMO said that the meeting would not involve negotiations.

Dr Ray Walley, IMO GP Chairman, said the union was prepared to explore the issue further with the other side.

The development follows Minister White's address to the IMO at its annual conference at the weekend.

Dr Walley, said; "These are not negotiations and we remain to be persuaded that there will be a basis for negotiations".

Mr White welcomed the decision by the IMO and said he looks forward to an early meeting.
