The People Before Profit Alliance has pledged to push for rent controls if its candidates are successful in next month's local elections.

The alliance is running 43 people in the council elections and is aiming to win a European Parliament seat in Dublin.

Rising rents and the growing social housing waiting list are the biggest issues on the doors along with water changes, the Alliance says.

The PBPA says it will demand the building of more social houses and the handing over of more NAMA properties to accommodate homeless people.

PBPA TD Richard Boyd Barrett said these elections will see the largest number of left-wing candidates in the history of the State.
