Taoiseach Enda Kenny has described next month's European Elections as the most important for the country since Ireland joined the EEC over 40 years ago.

Launching the Fine Gael election campaign, Mr Kenny said the parliament being elected would have unprecedented powers, making it more vital than ever that the best people be sent to represent Ireland there.

He said Fine Gael wanted Europe to prioritise the issues that made a real difference to people's lives.
