An old but viable grenade found during a renovation of a building in Co Galway was made safe last night.

The Defence Forces' Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team was deployed following a request from gardaí after a suspect device was found at a site during building works in the Raheen area, near Caherlistrane.

The device was moved from the scene to an open area nearby, where a controlled explosion was carried out.

The grenade is believed to have dated from the early 20th century, and was a type used in the War of Independence, the Civil War, and both World Wars.
