A mother in the US state of Massachusetts has given a birth to 14.5 pounds baby girl.

Massachusetts General Hospital has welcomed its second-biggest baby ever delivered at the hospital.

Carisa Ruscak, who was delivered by Caesarean section, was born to parents Caroline and Bryan Ruscak of Burlington on Tuesday.

The little girl's parents said they were prepared for this because Carisa's older sister was also a large baby of 10.5 pounds.

The average weight for the newborns is usually about seven pounds.
