A 67-year-old man has died following a hit-and-run in Loughrea, Co Galway last night.

He has been named as John White from St Laurence's Fields in Loughrea.

The incident happened at around 8.30pm when Mr White's bike was hit by a car close to pedestrian lights on the Gort Road.

The vehicle, believed to have been a blue BMW, with a partial registration of 01 G, drove away from the scene in the direction of Gort.

Mr White was taken to University College Hospital Galway where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2am.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out by State Pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy.

Gardaí say the car would have visible damage to the front and it is also believed that a right rear light was not working.

They have appealed for witnesses to contact Loughrea Garda Station at 091-842870.
