Dublin City Council has said it has received a number of complaints from the public about election posters that have allegedly been put up before the permitted date.

The council said it is investigating the complaints and is also monitoring the situation generally.

It can initiate proceedings in respect of any breaches of the Litter Pollution Act.

A fine of €150 per breach can be issued.

Postering is only permitted from midnight tonight until midnight on 30 May.

Dublin City Council has already written to all current councillors and registered political parties advising them of their obligations in respect of the erection and removal of election posters.
