A man questioned in connection with a hit-and-run incident in east Cork yesterday has been released without charge.

A seven-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after he was struck by a car that failed to stop.

The incident happened in Ballymacoda village near Youghal at around 1pm yesterday.

A 48-year-old local man was arrested shortly afterwards by gardaí.

He was detained for questioning at Midleton Garda Station, but he was released without charge late last night.

A file is to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The young boy remains in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital.

Gardaí at Midleton have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the incident to contact them.
