A new initiative to boost broadband speeds has been launched in Claremorris, Co Mayo.

Fibre connectivity is being offered to all businesses, in what has been described as a significant boost for local industry.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte said transactions worth €4bn are being conducted online each year.

He said the digital economy is growing at ten times the rate of the normal economy and that this highlights the need for reliable and adequate connectivity around the country.

He also said that he felt RTÉ should promote uptake in fibre technology and broadcast a television show to encourage small companies to go online in order to enhance their businesses.
