A 34-year-old woman has died in a house fire in Co Sligo.

The fire broke out in an upstairs room of a house at White Strand View, Aylesbury Park, in Sligo town at about 9.20pm last night.

The woman, Caitriona Feely, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ms Feely's two nephews were in the house at the time.

Her three-year-old nephew was taken to safety by his 18-year-old brother.

Neighbours tried to rescue Ms Feely, but they were beaten back by the flames and smoke.

Sligo acting fire chief Gerry O'Malley said the blaze was contained within the upstairs part of the house and was brought under control in 40 minutes.

A technical examination of the scene has taken place.

A post-mortem examination will take place at Sligo General Hospital.
