The funeral of Fine Gael TD Nicky McFadden has taken place in Athlone.

Mourners heard that Ms McFadden fought her illness with all the determination and fight she could muster.

She was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in December 2012.

Fr Declan Shannon said the 51-year-old TD would be remembered for the rich tapestry of life she brought to her family who had great memories of her at home, away on sun holidays and as a vivacious person who enjoyed fashion.

Deputy McFadden's daughter Caren said she was a person of great love and wisdom who would be fondly missed.

President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore and several members of the Cabinet were among the mourners at Our Lady's Queen of Peace Church at Coosan.

TDs and Senators from all parties joined family and friends of the late TD at the church.

Students from secondary schools in the Athlone area also attended.

The Taoiseach delivered an oration at the graveside in Coosan cemetery.
