CCTV footage from the home of a major criminal who was shot dead in Dublin last night is being gathered by gardaí investigating the killing.

Stephen 'Dougie' Moran, who was connected to subversive and organised crime, was shot a number of times by a lone gunman as he walked to his front door at Earlsfort View in Lucan at about 7.30pm yesterday.

He was taken to Tallaght Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mr Moran operated a security company and had a controlling interest in a number of pubs.

He was a target of the Criminal Assets Bureau and the Special Detectives Unit.

He was suspected of involvement in two murders and was a known associate of convicted drug dealer John Gilligan.

In recent times Mr Moran was offering protection to Gilligan and had been driving him around in his armour-plated car.

Gilligan is recovering in hospital after being shot two weeks ago.

Gardaí are investigating if that shooting and the murder of Mr Moran are connected.

A burned-out car was located yesterday in Glen Vale, Lucan.

Gardaí are investigating the possibility that this may have been used in the attack.

They are appealing to witnesses or anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
