A man has died after a shooting in Lucan in west  Dublin.

The shooting happened at a house in Earlsford View at around 7.30pm.

The victim, in his 40s, was shot a number of times.

He was taken to Tallaght Hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

The victim was known to gardaí for his involvement in criminal gangs in Dublin and Limerick.

He was also a known associate of the convicted drug dealer John Gilligan, who is recovering in Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown after he was shot two weeks ago at his brother's home in Clondalkin.

A burned-out car has been located in Glen Vale, Lucan.

Gardaí are investigating the possibility that this may have been used in the attack.

The scene at Earlsfort View has been sealed-off and gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Lucan Garda Station.
