A 41-year-old man has pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving, which caused the deaths of two sisters in Co Galway in October 2012.

Two-year-old Kate Gilmore and her 12-week-old sister, Grace, died following a collision on the outskirts of Tuam.

John O'Connor, with an address at Waterslade Downs in Tuam, was before Galway Circuit Criminal Court this morning.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at the Demesne, Tuam on 21 October 2012, which caused the deaths of Kate and Grace.

State prosecutor, Patrick McGrath SC, told the brief hearing that the plea met the case against the accused for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

He told the court that a nolle prosequi would be entered in due course on a number of outstanding charges.

These include failing to remain at the scene of an accident, dangerous driving at another location in Tuam and failing to make a required declaration on a driving licence application.

After deliberations between legal representatives following this morning's hearing, a sentencing date of 14 March was agreed upon.
