Gardaí in Dundalk have begun a criminal investigation following an assault on a 63-year-old man in a pub in the Co Louth town last Friday.

The man sustained serious head injuries and is now on life support in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Gardaí have appealed for anyone who was in Fagan's pub or in the Castletown Road area of Dundalk last Friday night to contact them at Dundalk Garda Station.

The victim was socialising in the pub last Friday when he was attacked sometime between 9pm and 10.30pm.

He was taken to hospital and released after treatment.

However, he was found unconscious by his daughter yesterday morning.

He was taken to hospital in Drogheda, where he is now in a critical condition.
