A housing estate in Kilcock, in Co Kildare, is spending its fifth night without street lighting.

The developer of Chambers Park went into liquidation in January, owing electricity company Electric Ireland €25,000.

There are 311 units in the housing estate, which is still unfinished.

Electric Ireland said it sent letters to both Kildare County Council and the Chambers Park Residents Association requesting that one of them take responsibility for future bills and informing them that supply would be withdrawn if nobody put their name on the bill.

The residents association said the first it heard about the outstanding debt was last Friday, when its chairperson inquired why the lights were not working.

Kildare County Council has not yet taken charge of the estate, so said it is not responsible for paying the bill.

However, a statement issued this evening by the council said: "In light of the potential health and safety aspect the Council is making arrangements with the utility company to restore public lighting to this estate and will seek to recover any costs from the receiver/liquidator."
