A 21-year-old man has been before the district court in Cork charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a man in Co Kerry two years ago.

Shane Fitzgerald of Upper Knockeen, Knockduff, Meelin, Co Cork, was arrested on the runway at Cork Airport just after 3.30pm.

Detective Sergeant Fergal Foley said Mr Fitzgerald replied "no" when he was charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Paud O'Leary about a kilometre from Mr O'Leary's home at Gneeveguilla in east Kerry on 1 July, 2012.

Mr O'Leary, a married father-of-four, was preparing for the 180km (112-mile) Ring of Kerry charity cycle to be held the following week when he was knocked off his bicycle and killed.

Mr Fitzgerald made no application for bail at this evening's court hearing.

Judge Olann Kelleher remanded him in custody. He will be brought before the district court in Tralee, Co Kerry, on Wednesday.
