Over 600 people are attending a night of poetry and music in Galway tonight to celebrate the life of Seamus Heaney.

The sell-out event is a fundraiser for the Cancer Care West charity.

It was organised by Des Kavanagh, a friend of the late poet.

Among those taking part in tonight's tribute at the Bailey Allen Hall at NUI Galway are Stephen Rea, Sean McGinley, Rita Ann Higgins and Marie Mullen.

Several other writers, artists, actors and musicians are also involved.

Heaney died in a Dublin hospital last September after a short illness.

He was 74.
