An investigation is under way after the death of a woman in a road accident in Co Longford.

The woman has been named locally as Bernie Kenny, 55, who was fatally injured when she was struck by a car at Legan village.

The incident occurred at around 1.30am.

Ms Kenny was the mother of one and had worked as secretary to Fine Gael TD James Bannon.

Mr Bannon said that: "Bernie worked with me for the last 12 years, since I first entered the Oireachtas."

He said: "She was not only an extremely loyal employee, but she was also a great source of personal support."

Ms Kenny was pronounced dead at the scene and her body removed to The Midlands Regional Hospital at Mullingar.

The driver of the car, a man in his early 40s, was arrested at the scene.

He is currently detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Longford Garda Station.
