A 36-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a Latvian man in Portarlington, Co Laois at the weekend.

Deivydas Zigelis, a Lithuanian national with an address at Spa Street in Portarlington, was charged with the murder of 26-year-old Alexander Karpov on Saturday.

Detective Garda Barry McPaul told Tullamore District Court that he arrested and cautioned Mr Zigelis at Portlaoise Garda Station at 2.01pm.

When cautioned, Det Gda McPaul said the defendant answered:  "No, I already gave my explanation to the guards in interview, I killed that man."

When subsequently charged with murder and cautioned at 2.35pm, Mr Zigelis responded: "No reply, everything has already been said."

Judge Catherine Staines granted legal aid and approved a request for an interpreter.

She remanded Mr Zigelis in custody to reappear before Cloverhill District Court on Thursday.
