A 30-year-old woman is in a serious condition in hospital following a fire at a house in Limerick city this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the fire at Shelbourne Terrace, Thomondgate at around 6am.

Three adults and two children were taken to University Hospital Limerick suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

A sixth person was also taken to hospital.

It is understood that person sustained injuries as they helped the occupants of the house escape the fire.

The house, which was badly damaged by the fire, has been sealed off and a technical examination is being carried out.
