An 11-month-old girl has died in England after being mauled by a dog, police have said.

Two people, a 24-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and are in police custody.

Ava Jayne Marie Corless was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital from a home in Emily Street at 11pm yesterday and later died.

The American pit-bull-type dog was seized from the address by Lancashire Police.

The girl's mother has been named locally as Chloe King and the man in custody was named as Lee Wright, who is not the baby's father.

Police have not confirmed the names of those under arrest.

They were downstairs when the attack took place, police said.

Locals claim to have made previous complaints about the dog's behaviour to police.

Detective Superintendent Simon Giles said: "This is a tragic incident and specially trained officers are offering support to the wider family.

"A full investigation is under way."

Nobody else was injured during the attack.
