A 33-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering a prison officer in Northern Ireland in 2012.

David Black, 52, was shot dead on his way to work at Maghaberry high security prison in Co Antrim.

Sean McVeigh, with an address at Victoria Street, Lurgan in Co Armagh, was also accused of possessing an AK47 rife and ammunition with intent to endanger life.

His lawyer said he would be submitting a defence to the main evidence against him.

Mr McVeigh was remanded in custody and is expected to apply for bail next week.

A group of around 30 supporters applauded as he left the dock at Craigavon Magistrates' Court.
