Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar has denied the Taoiseach "shafted" the Minister for Communications over the pylons review.

Mr Varadkar told RTÉ's The Week in Politics that 35,000 people, or nearly 1% of the population, had made submissions over the planned route for the power lines.

He said the Government could not ignore this and they would have been criticised if they had.

Asked if the north east would be included in the review, Mr Varadkar said most of the early work on the project had examined that area.

He said a planning application for the pylons there would be lodged soon.
