An investigation is under way after a human skull was found washed up on a beach in Co Galway. 

It was discovered by a local person out walking on the beach near Clifden earlier today. 

The skull has been removed to University Hospital Galway for examination. 

It is understood a search of the area is to be carried out tomorrow to see if other human remains exist.
