The liquidators of Mount Carmel Hospital have told unions that the last baby will be delivered at the hospital this Friday.

Speaking after a meeting with the liquidators, SIPTU official Kevin Figgis said they had been told that there would be an obstetric consultant on call until Friday 7 February.

Antenatal care will be available at the hospital up to that date.

Elective procedures were halted from last Friday, when the liquidators were appointed.

Unions will hold a further meeting with the liquidators tomorrow, when further details will be provided of how the 328 redundancies will be managed.

Mr Figgis urged the National Asset Management Agency to redouble its efforts to find a white knight buyer to take over the hospital.

He noted that Mount Carmel was not just a maternity hospital, but had been providing treatment for thousands of public patients.
