Gardaí in Co Longford are continuing an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 36-year-old man.

The man's body was discovered in the early hours of yesterday at an apartment in the Harbour Point area of Longford town.

Detectives are trying to determine if he was injured in an earlier altercation in the area.

The man, who was of Polish origin, is understood to have been out socialising with friends on Saturday night.

It is thought he may have fallen at one stage.

His body was brought to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, where a post mortem examination was carried out.

It is believed the results of that investigation are inconclusive and further inquiries will now be required to establish the man's last movements and to determine if he was involved in an altercation.

A further forensic examination of the scene was carried out today.

Gardaí are continuing to speak to other residents who were in the area.
