A 14-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after an incident in Kinsale in Co Cork.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are not clear. It is understood that it is being treated as a tragic accident.

The boy was with friends when he fell and became wedged in railings.

The alarm was raised and the boy was freed.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital where he is being treated for serious head injuries.

A garda investigation is under way.
