Galway University Hospital has cancelled all non-urgent surgery for a second day.

The hospital says a significant increase in the number of patients waiting in the emergency department has put pressure on services.

It has urged people to contact their GP or out-of-hours doctor on call service before travelling to the hospital.

The increase in patient numbers has been put down to seasonal illnesses, common at this time of year.
