A woman has been arrested after an incident in which a traffic warden was the subject of a pepper spray attack in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

Gardaí confirmed the warden, who is in her 50s, was pepper sprayed while working in Oliver Plunkett Street at around 11.50am.

It is understood the incident took place after a dispute over a disabled parking disc.

A 28-year-old woman, who is believed to live locally, was later arrested and brought to Mullingar Garda Station. 

She was questioned about the incident before being released without charge.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the matter and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
