A delegation from the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade has been meeting senior Iranian leaders in Tehran.
Earlier this morning, the delegation of four TDs and one Senator met the Chair of National Security Committee Ala Eddin Boroujerdy and the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Ali Larijani.
A meeting with Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was held today.
Committee Chair Pat Breen of Fine Gael told the Iranians that he hoped the Irish parliamentary visit would prove to be useful in promoting closer ties between the two countries.
He told Mr Larijani that he believed the recent election of Hasan Rohani as President of Iran had opened-up the possibility of a new relationship with the west.
Delegates were expected to discuss the nuclear talks in Geneva, trade between Ireland and Iran, and human rights.
Ireland closed its embassy in Tehran a few years ago due to cut-backs.
