A 49-year-old man has been charged with the assault and the attempted sexual assault of a young woman in Dublin yesterday.

James Donohue, with an address at Harold's Cross Road in Dublin, was charged with assaulting the woman and attempting to sexually assault her in the early hours of yesterday morning at Effra Road in Rathmines.

Dublin District Court heard the charges were put to him at Terenure Garda Station yesterday evening.

He made no reply to the charge of assault and said "I'm not going to plead to that" in response to the second charge.

The court was told he did not intend to make an application for bail at the moment.

He was remanded in custody and will be brought before Cloverhill District Court next Tuesday.

Judge Michael Walsh was told Mr Donohue was under the care of a psychiatrist.

The judge ordered that he receive medical care while in custody.
