Several people, including a number of children, were rescued from a fire at an apartment block in Dublin city centre overnight.

The fire broke out at a building at Thomas Court, off Thomas Street, at around 3.30am this morning.

Fire crews had to cut through security bars on ground floor windows to rescue some of those who were trapped.

Dublin Fire Brigade District Officer David Kavanagh said that a couple of people were trapped.

Firemen had to rescue people from the second floor by ladder.
