A 30-year-old man has died following a stabbing in Drogheda, Co Louth.

He has been named as Wayne McQuillan of Marian Park in Drogheda.

The incident happened in the Rathmullen Park area at about 1.30am.

Gardaí found Mr McQuillan in a collapsed state with a number of stab wounds in the front garden of a house.

He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí launched a murder inquiry following a post mortem which was carried out this afternoon.

A 40-year-old woman arrested in connection with the investigation is being held at Drogheda Garda Station.
