Two men in their 40s have died following a two-car collision in Co Mayo in the early hours of this morning.

The crash happened at Ballynahaglish, a short distance from Ballina, just before 5am.

They were the only occupants of the cars and both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The have been named as 47-year-old Gearóid Ó Scollaí from Ballina and 43-year-old Terence Beagan from Dundalk, Co Louth.

Their bodies were removed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.

The men are the first people to lose their lives on the State's roads in 2014.
