The bulk cargo ship the Abuk Lion has been towed safely into the deep water berth at Ringaskiddy in Cork.

The 108-metre vessel radioed for help when its engine failed about 33 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale on Sunday afternoon.

The carrier, which is fully laden with bauxite, had been en route from Aughinish in Co Limerick to St Petersburg in Russia.

Efforts to bring her to port yesterday ended when deteriorating weather conditions forced the vessel to drop anchor at the entrance to Cork Harbour.

The operation to bring her shore-side recommenced at 6.30am this morning, but it was a number of hours before towing commenced.
