A 13-year-old boy had to be rescued from the River Boyne earlier this evening.

The youngster was playing close to the river's edge when he appears to have accidentally fallen into the river opposite Drogheda Garda Station.

It is understood a member of the public threw a life ring to him and that a number of agencies, including the gardaí, responded.

The teenager was removed from the river by the Irish Coast Guard.
