Swiss authorities have confirmed an Irish skier has been killed in an avalanche in the Swiss Alps.

The 27-year-old man who lived in Zurich was reported missing on St Stephen’s Day, however poor weather delayed a rescue mission until this morning.

The avalanche occurred near the town of Realp in the Swiss Alps.

The victim’s body was found following a search by an alpine rescue helicopter.

There have been repeated avalanche warnings in the Alps due to mild weather and heavy snowfall over the past two days.

A second skier was killed in an avalanche in the Piz Nir area above St Moritz this morning.
