A murder inquiry is under way following the death of a 29-year-old man in Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Owen Maughan died from gunshot wounds he sustained in an attack yesterday afternoon.

Mr Maughan was getting diesel at a filling station when he was approached by a gunman and shot three times at point-blank range.

He was taken to Mayo General Hospital, but died last night from his injuries.

Garda forensic experts have carried out a detailed forensic examination at the scene of the attack.

It occurred a short distance from where Mr Maughan lived in Oak View, a housing estate on the edge of Castlebar.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the shooting to come forward.

Yesterday's attack was the second such incident to take place at the location in 2013.

In January, a brother of Mr Maughan was injured after he was shot at from a van that pulled up beside him at the filling station.

It is believed the killing may be linked to an ongoing feud between two families in Co Mayo that has escalated in recent months.

There have been a number of incidents as a result and gardaí are examining whether this killing can be directly linked to the ongoing tension.
