Gardaí are investigating an armed robbery in Howth in Co Dublin this morning during which a mother and child were tied up.

At about 9.15am two men knocked on the door of their home at Casana View in Howth.

When the woman opened it the two men forced their way in.

Two more men came in through the back of the house.

They tied up the 43-year-old woman and her eight-year-old daughter, threatened them and demanded money before taking a substantial amount of money from a safe.

They spent around 20 minutes in the house before leaving with the family car, an 07 Honda CRV, which was later found abandoned in Howth.

The mother managed to free herself and her child before raising the alarm.

The woman's partner, a dentist, was not in the house at the time.

Gardaí say the mother and child at the centre of this ordeal remain deeply traumatised this evening but are otherwise unhurt.

They have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information on the incident to contact them.

They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen anything or anyone around Casana View between 8.30am and 9.30am.
