A man has been arrested in connection with the hijacking of a car at gunpoint in Co Laois on Monday night.

A 31-year-old woman's car was hijacked as she waited outside a shop in Ballylinan near the Laois/Kildare border on Monday night.

An armed man approached the car at about 9.10pm and forced her from the vehicle at gunpoint. He then fled in the car.

The vehicle was later discovered burnt-out around 20km away at Kildangan, near Monasterevin in Co Kildare.

Gardaí arrested a 34-year-old man at around 8am.

He is being questioned at Portlaoise Garda Station, where he can be held for a maximum of 72 hours.
