"Pope Francis" was the most talked about topic on Facebook over the past year, according to data released by the social network.

The 2013 Facebook Year in Review also reveals that the second most discussed topic was "election".

It has attributed this to high-profile national elections in countries such as India, Kenya, Iran and Italy.

Britain's new "Royal Baby" was the third most talked about topic, followed by the "Typhoon" that struck the Philippines, according to the data released by the company.

"Margaret Thatcher", "Harlem Shake", "Miley Cyrus", "Boston Marathon" and "Tour de France" were the next most popular terms.

The declining health and recent death of "Nelson Mandela" was the tenth most discussed topic.

The company carried out the survey by measuring how many Facebook posts in 2013 mentioned a specific topic.

It then ranked those topics based on the overall number of mentions of the term itself and related hashtags to create each list.

In Britain, "Andy Murray" winning Wimbledon was the most talked about topic, while in the US the "Super Bowl" topped the list.

"Added a relationship, got engaged or got married", "Travelled" or "Moved" were the top three life events that people added to their Facebook timeline during the year.
