Founder of the Jack and Jill Children's Foundation Jonathan Irwin has confirmed he intends to run in the next general election.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio, Mr Irwin said he hopes to run as an Independent candidate in the Kildare South constituency because he has become frustrated at the lack of new people entering the Irish political scene.

The 72-year-old husband of Lily O'Brien's chocolate founder Senator Mary Ann O'Brien said he would hope to serve one term in the Dáil after an election likely to be over two years away.

Meanwhile, Mr Irwin said the revelations regarding top-ups to executives at the Central Remedial Clinic was damaging not only to the Jack and Jill Foundation but the charity sector as a whole.
