The PSNI have said a pipe bomb attack in Co Tyrone last night was a deliberate attempt to kill police officers.

The pipe bomb attack on the police patrol happened in the Ballycolman Housing Estate in Strabane.

The device, which failed to detonate, was discovered by a member of the public who lifted the bomb and moved it to an area of waste ground.

A British Army bomb disposal team defused the device and residents who had been evacuated from their houses were allowed to return home at 3am.

In another incident in Belfast an attempt was made to burn down offices belonging to the Alliance Party.

Two petrol bombs were thrown at the Alliance Party offices on the Upper Newtownards Road.

One device ignited on the street and was extinguished by a passing police patrol.

The Alliance Party MP for the area, Naomi Long, said the incident was an attack on democracy.
