New school attendance figures show an improvement in the numbers of children going to school every day.

Data from the National Educational Welfare Board, based on the 2010-2011 school year, finds attendance levels higher than at any other time in the previous five years.

However, a total of 6% of primary school days and 8% of post-primary school days are still lost through student absenteeism.

The board said the improvement is across all schools.

Figures on serious non-attendance show an improvement at post-primary level in the number of students missing 20 days or more.

Figures at primary level for 20-day absences have remained relatively stable.
